Open shapes

Larger apertures are more legible and help provide unique shapes.

Pay attention to letters such as o, c, e or a.

Joint letters

Script typefaces can harder to read if letters join.

Some letter combinations can create unfamiliar shapes.

Recognisable

Check that multiple characters don’t share the same letterform.

Eg. upper case ‘i’, lower case ‘L’ and the number 1.

Mirroring

Letters horizontally flipped should have distinct characteristics.

Pay attention to letters such as d and b, or q an p.

Higher x-heights

Fonts with taller x-heights are more legible, especially at smaller sizes.
